SALON DRESS CODES A THING OF THE PAST?

TONI & GUY recently announced a new dress code; NO DRESS CODE! Watch the video for the full message. I love what he says about change; that salons must change if they want to grow. He says today’s hairdressing is not yesterday’s hairdressing.

Hair is fashion and I think it’s so important for employees to express this every day in the way they dress to stimulate and inspire creativity and foster a stylish and artistic atmosphere.

Thank you Toni & Guy for doing what so many salons have been considering for years!

winter’s toll.

i don’t know about you, but mixture of going from frigid cold chicago winds to a building where the heat is cranked all the way to eleven has really taken a toll on my tresses. every day you look your faced in the mirror to a moisture stripped head of hair. “when will it end?” you ask? RIGHT NOW! don’t let this winter rule you. take control & treat your tresses to an intense moisturizer treatment. only an extra ten bucks at your next service. whoa. what a deal.

in the mean time, here are a few hair secrets i want to share with you.

during the winter the air is super dry, which makes everything about you even drier. no matter how much water you drink and fish oil you consume, you’re hair & skin need constant moisture.

wishy washy. skip the wash when you take a shower. you don’t have to wash your hair every time you get your hair wet. you don’t even have to get it wet, really. the natural oils your scalp secretes is GREAT for the hair shaft & scalp. comb those oils thru inbetween washes. (be careful, if your hair is extremely dry it is a HOLD UP, don’t go ripping thru those tangles. you are going to ruin that head of hair!) if you need to restyle or just like to get your head wet & clean, refrain from shampooing every time. apply generously to your hair, ends first & go about your shower routine. five, ten, whatever minutes later, right before you get out, wash our conditioner out with WARM water (not hot!!! you’re drying out all those oils! i know it’s winter, but go a week without scolding your skin with piping hot water & thank me later. i know you’re skin will.)

take care of your body. eat lots of good fats, like avocados. consuming vitamin d is good for everything. drinking plenty of water & staying hydrated is the best.

home remedies. tight budget? feeling inventive? bring it back, mom style. warning, may get messy.

gentle cleanse! (so nice & gentle)
step one: separate the white of an egg & it’s white. beat the egg white in a tablespoon of milk (1% to skim milk is best, soy milk will also work). it will start to get foamy, keep whisking until the foam becomes consistent. mix the white mixture & yolk together.
step two: wet your hair with warm water & work into scalp. massage gently & rake thru hair.
step three: leave on for five minutes.
step four: rinse.
do this twice a week. mmm protein.

get slick!
step one: get over the gross factor of applying mayo to your head.
step two: heat up one half cup of mayonnaise until it becomes an oily, white goo. (barf!)
step three: apply to dry to your even drier, unwashed hair. make sure to work thoroughly through to your ends.
step four: cover your hair with a plastic bag & leave on for at least fifteen minutes. Then, rinse & shampoo thoroughly.

beat the heat!
cut down on the thermal heat you apply to your tresses. i know, mom said you “can’t leave the house with a wet head!” & i don’t know about you, but who wants to be waiting for the bus to come with a collection of icicles on top of your head? don’t worry, we’re staying true to the parental guidelines you’ve embedded in your brain & we’re saving the environment! well, sorta. when i have a wet head i apply a creme based wet styling product. personally i am a huge fan of aveda “be curly” styling creme. it moisturizes & holds a loose curl & low frizz? PERFECT! then i start at the base of my hair shaft & blast with paul mitchell’s express ion dry protool v.1. it has a higher voltage with diffuser to dry fast, ion’s keep it safe & the better the drier, the less frizz. seriously. (if you have a professional grade hair drier it’s totally worth the price. you’ll notice a difference in one wash & dry from that crappy fold up blow drier you’ve had since ‘99.) after the roots are all dry, turn off the blow drier, walk away & pour yourself a cup of joe. it’s so simple. every bit helps.
**another hair saver: pin curls! shower at night and set your hair before you go to bed. if you’re a violent sleeper, be careful. avoid braiding because you end up putting stress on the elastin of your hair while it’s wet. your hair shrinks as it dries, so you end up breaking your hair if elastin is poor. save braiding for when your hair has fully dried.

bundle up. the harsh winds of chicago do a number, so cover up & protect yourself before you wreck yourself.

right before thanksgiving i had a shoot with a few fancy models, one bad ass make-up artist and the talented miss melinda jane myers. it was a messy day in downtown chicago w/sleet, hail and freezing rain (ick!) but everyone involved really put in (as cheesy as it sounds) one hundred and one percent. way to go ladies!

first model, cassie alexandra.
second model, jennie lui.
make up artistry, maris fujiuara.
photographer, melinda jane myers.

<3

inspirational shizzz.

there are alot of shoots coming up in the next three weeks.
recently, i’ve teamed up with this AMAZING make-up artist, maris fuijia. she’s the most fun to work with and a total babe to boot! every shoot i’ve done with her has produced amazing shots… both with melinda jane myers and chris nightengale. those two also kick some serious butt.

week one:
shoot w. chris nightenagle & maris fujiura and modeling this bad ass concept will be jenna slutsky.

week two:
shoot w. chris nightengale & maris fujiura and rocking some serious bone structure will be lisa dillion.
shoot w. melinda jane myers & goshia for this futuristic clothing designer based out of chicago. THIS fancy shoot will be for a magazine publication. (say wuhhh!)

week three:
shoot w. chris nightengale & maris fujiura and the lovely clara wong will be striking some serious poses with some sickening hair.
shoot w. chris nightengale & maris fujiura shooting the glamourous cassie dumas for a thriller gone glam shoot. boom.

THEN IT’S TIME TO GO BACK TO NEW YORK FOR CHRISTMAS!!!

so yeah, im getting inspired. get ready to see the results weekly (depending on how fast they’re edited.) and i’ll be posting new shoots that have been edited from the past few weeks as well as posting the most adorable and bad ass hair i just couldn’t resist but share w. the world.

enjoy.

i just love this.so simple.so cute.
